What is ESI?

ESI is an acronym for Epidural Steroid Injections. This type of injection delivers anti-inflammatory medicine directly to the affected area of the back to reduce the inflammation that may be irritating the nerve root and causing low back pain and/or leg pain (sciatica). The medicine injected is a type of corticosteroid solution, such as Depo-Medro, Aristocort, Kenalog-40, or Decadron. Although our body naturally produces cortisol during times of stress, injections can localize the effect of a steroid; thus, providing more effective and longer lasting pain relief.

What is the procedure for ESIs?

A skin anesthetic, such as lidocaine, is used to numb the area of the injection previous to injection of the medicine. Then, using fluoroscopy, the physician guides the needle into the epidural space and injects the steroid solution when satisfied with the position. The entire procedure takes about 15- 30 minutes.

What are the side effects?

Common side effects to normal amounts of injected steroids are:
• Irregular menstruation
• Hot, flushed feelings
• Mild fluid retention
• Increased appetite
• Increased susceptibility to common viruses

Are most people who receive epidural steroid injections satisfied with the pain relief it provides?

Yes, despite the side-effects and potential pain involved in this procedure, it usually alleviates a significant enough amount of pain for the patient that they are glad they received the injection.
